How to Temporarily Deactivate Your Instagram Account

Hide your profile without deleting anything — here is exactly what deactivation does and how to switch it back on.

Temporary deactivation hides your Instagram profile, posts, and activity from everyone else without deleting a single thing. It’s the right choice for a break from the app, and unlike permanent deletion, it’s fully reversible any time you choose.

What actually happens when you deactivate

  • Your profile, photos, and videos become invisible to other users
  • Your comments and likes disappear from other people’s posts while deactivated
  • Direct messages you’ve sent remain visible to the people you sent them to
  • Nothing is deleted — it’s all restored instantly the moment you log back in

How to deactivate your account

  1. Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
  2. Scroll to the bottom and tap Deactivate account.
  3. Choose a reason from the list Instagram provides.
  4. Re-enter your password to confirm, then tap Deactivate Account.

You’ll be logged out immediately after confirming, and your profile disappears from Instagram right away.

How to reactivate

Reactivation couldn’t be simpler: open the app or website and log in with your usual username and password. There’s no separate “reactivate” button to find — signing in is the reactivation.

Limitations worth knowing

  • You can only deactivate once every seven days, so it isn’t meant for daily on/off toggling.
  • Instagram recommends logging back in at least once within a year; extremely long inactivity can eventually put your username at risk of release.
  • If you want a break but also want your data backed up just in case, do that first — see downloading your Instagram data.
  • If you’re certain you want everything gone rather than paused, permanent deletion is covered in our main deletion guide.

Frequently asked questions

Nothing is deleted — your profile, photos, comments and likes are simply hidden from other users until you log back in.
Simply log back in with your username and password, on the app or the website, and your profile is instantly restored exactly as you left it.
There is no fixed deadline, but Instagram recommends logging back in within a year, and inactivity for very long periods can affect username reservation.
