How to Temporarily Deactivate Your Instagram Account

Temporarily deactivating your Instagram account hides your profile, photos, comments and likes from everyone else, without deleting a single thing. It is fully reversible, takes effect instantly, and reverses just as fast - simply by logging back in.

How to deactivate

• Log into instagram.com in a browser (this option is not available inside the mobile app)
• Go to your profile and select Edit profile
• Scroll to the bottom and choose Temporarily deactivate my account
• Select a reason from the dropdown, then re-enter your password to confirm

What stays hidden while you are deactivated

Your profile, posts, comments and likes all disappear from other people's view. Your account will not show up in search, and your previous comments on other people's posts will not display either. None of it is deleted - it all comes back exactly as it was.

What does not change

Direct messages you already sent typically remain visible to the people you sent them to. If your account is linked to a Facebook profile or other apps, those connections stay in place and simply reflect the deactivated status until you log back in.

How to reactivate

Just log back in with your username and password, from the app or the website - there is no separate "reactivate" button to find, and no waiting period involved. Everything reappears immediately.

One limit worth knowing

Instagram only allows an account to be deactivated once per week, so it is not something you can toggle on and off multiple times a day.

Deactivate or delete?
