Why Can't I Delete My Instagram Account? Common Problems and Fixes

Instagram's account deletion process is simple in theory, but a handful of situations commonly trip people up. Here are the most frequent causes and how to resolve each one.

You are looking in the app instead of a browser

This is by far the most common issue. Instagram only offers permanent deletion through instagram.com in a browser - it is not available anywhere inside the mobile app, on iPhone or Android. See our guides for iPhone and Android for the exact steps.

Your account is a business or creator account

Business and professional accounts follow the same basic deletion steps, but if the account is linked to a Facebook Page or connected through Meta Business Suite, you may need to unlink those connections first. See our dedicated business account deletion guide for the extra steps involved.

You cannot remember your password

You must be logged in to reach the deletion page, so a forgotten password blocks the process entirely until it is reset. Use the Forgot password link on the login screen to reset it via your email or phone number, then return to the deletion steps.

Instagram is asking you to verify your identity first

If Instagram suspects unusual activity, it may temporarily require additional verification (such as confirming your email, phone number, or a photo of yourself) before allowing account changes, including deletion. Complete whichever verification step it requests, then try again.

Your account is under review for a policy violation

If your account has been flagged for a suspected violation of Instagram's Community Guidelines, some account actions - including deletion - can be temporarily restricted until the review is resolved. Check your app notifications or email for any message from Instagram about your account status.

You are trying to delete someone else's account

Only the account owner, logged in with the correct username and password, can request its deletion. There is no way for a third party, including this site, family members, or Instagram support acting on a verbal request, to delete an account on someone else's behalf.

Still stuck?

If none of the above applies and the option is still missing, Instagram's in-app Help Center (under Settings) has a direct line to report the specific issue you are seeing.
